Visitor Visa

This visa is for the temporary entry of people for tourism purposes.

Tourist Visa

This visa allows people to visit Australia for a holiday or recreation, or to visit family and/or friends for a stay up to three or six or twelve months. This visa may also be used for other short-term non-work purposes.

Who should apply?

This visa is available to all passport holders who are outside Australia and want to apply for a visa to visit Australia.

Visitors of certain nationalities are eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or an eVisitor.

 

Business Visitor Visa

This visa is for the temporary entry of people for business purposes.

For applicants seeking to engage in business visitor activities including:-

  • Making general business or government enquiries
  • Contract Negotiations
  • Government visits
  • Attending conference, seminars, Job interviews or Professional examinations

You cannot work for or provide services to a business or organisation in Australia or sell goods or services to the public. If you are intending to do short-term work in Australia you should apply for the new Temporary work (short stay activity) visa (subclass 400).

Who should apply?

This visa is available to all passport holders who are outside Australia and want to apply for a visa to visit Australia.

OVERVIEW

Transit  Visa

This visa allows people to transit through Australia.

Who should apply?

This visa is for:

  • people who wish to transit through Australia and who do not qualify for transit without a visa or
  • people travelling to Australia to join a vessel as crew

A transit visa is required even if:

  • you fly out on the same aircraft and from the same airport at which you arrived
  • you stay in the transit lounge and do not leave the airport

Temporary Visa

Temporary Work Short Stay Activity (sub class 400)

This visa allows for the temporary entry of people intending to:

  • Undertake short-term ,non-ongoing highly specialized work
  • Participate in non-ongoing cultural or social activities at the invitation of an Australian Organization
  • Domestic helpers accompanying their employer on holidays

Who should apply?

  • Applicant who intends to undertake non-ongoing highly specialized work and have an employment background and /or personal attributes that are consistent with the work they propose to engage in :or
  • Applicants who have been invited to participate in one or more non-ongoing events by an organization in Australia (that is involved in organizing the event)
  • Domestic workers (particularly maids or nannies) working for individuals coming to Australia for a short period on visitor visas.
  • Family members can apply on the same form but willot be able to work in Australia

The Student visa comprises 8 subclasses (subclass 570–576), based on the education sector of your main course.

A further subclass of student visa, the Student Guardian (Subclass 580) visa, provides for certain persons to reside with a student under 18 years of age in Australia, where that student requires a guardian.

Who should apply?

The Student visa is for you if you want to do one of the following:

  • apply for your first student visa
  • renew your student visa
  • apply to join a family member who is in Australia on a student visa

The Student Guardian visa is for foreign nationals applying to stay in Australia as the guardian of a student under 18 years of age who is studying in Australia.

Australia's temporary residence policy facilitates the entry, on a temporary basis, of people who can contribute to the economic, cultural and social development of the Australian community. Temporary residence visas allow people to live and work in Australia for a limited time. Most subclasses require sponsorship by an Australian organization which must be approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP ) in Australia before the application is lodged.
